Jolography

By Paolo Manalo

Poem Analysis

As defined in the report, Jolography is a response in developing a third-space of poetic language that fore goes “pure English” & “pure Filipino.” It uses incomprehensible idiomatic expressions to create allusions at the same time, makes it entertaining. Though some words are difficult to explain because it is a combination of English and Tagalog language, but still it helped us develop our poetic and literary skills. The use of humorous words is also present in which helped us analyze the way it has been delivered. There is a linguistic play, breakage of language, creation of hybrid language in Filipino and English to respond to new Philippine social realities. Also, the sense of creativity that explores potencies of humor (not just as laughter) but as entries into national delineations of identities.

The Jolography of Paolo Manalo implies the modernity of the fashion-style and how it greatly affects in our lives. There we can sense that, there are bunch of yo-yos in outdoor crowd that still exist nowadays. Also, in our society, there are jologs and baduys seen. But still, the fact that it is also a good-thing since being fashionable was also an art. Being fashionable is sexless. The poem jolography implied the way people lived as cool and baduy thingy. For example, “Oh, how dead you child are,” just means “Patay kang bata ka” in Tagalog. A certain child displaying his sportedness as being spoiled. Beautifulling doesn’t simply generate of feeling beautiful but also embracing the beauty as how Cubao language was being spoken and that it could be seen in crossing ibabaw (somewhere a place in Manila).

It made me realized that through this poetry, it signifies the importance of the two languages starting with the Filipino up until English. Every word in line of the poem has its distinct meaning. Good thing about the poem is that it also emphasizing and embracing the beauty of the language and giving pride of it mentioned in the line “beautifulling as we speak in Cubao”. Still, the way people dressed like being baduy somehow instill the essence of fashion. I can also sense the amusing and happy life of jologs.

2. Choose one stanza from the poem and write a reflection about it.

This city and its heart attacks; one minute faster

Than four o’clock, and the next

Wave that stands out in the outdoor crowd

Hanging with a bunch of yo-yos-

A face with an inverted cap on, wearing all

Smiles the smell of foot stuck between the teeth

The stanza of this poem described fashion as an art. Nowadays, there are people wearing like baduy; wearing inverted cap that seemed being proud. Baduy has always endearing its sincerity. There are also yo-yos out there in the crowd. The personal style of a person plays significance of living as it freely expresses ourselves from the choices of an outfit we put on. It simply means of being authentic and not pretending to others.

It seems that in a dance club, people are enjoying. Every beat of the music counts and seems that one minute is faster than four o’clock wave that stands out in the outdoor crowd. Sometimes, if we tend to have fun with we are doing, we aren’t aware of the time. We just realized the time, after we are satisfied. The groove and atmosphere vibrate in our senses as we feel it. Plus, accompanied with other yo-yos.

Though it seems informal to others, it still shares self-awareness and helped us be creative in our own little ways. We never lose of style. Filipinos are aware because it’s the way we dressed and it’s a fashion. Also, in the stanza, in the city there were lot of people. The city’s atmosphere was always in a mood to enjoy. That’s why people have fun with other yo-yos and the smiles of the faces can be seen.
